Another Installment of Dialogues with a 3 Year Old

It's no secret that Josh is afraid of the dark. He sleeps with his overhead light on every night. He won't walk down the hall if it's dark. Aside from the inconvenience this provides for us parents, it's the dialogue that results from reasoning with him about the dark that makes it just funny.

Take for example the other day when he wanted to retrieve something from his room. He led me by the hand down the hall because his room was dark. I asked him what we could do to remedy the situation. He thought for just a second, reached up to the light switch and said:

"It'd help if I turned the light on."

Just like that. And in the same tone of voice that implies "dude, could you help me out here? This isn't rocket science."

Another example was this morning. The power went out about 6 am. This caused Josh to awaken because his overhead light went out. He ran over to the light switch and then the wailing began:

"It's broken. Mommy, daddy, the light's broken."

Wade ran in to see if everything was okay and Josh said "put batteries in. It's broken daddy."

He was brought back to our room and given a flashlight. That seemed to placate him for a bit until he wanted to watch Barney and we tried to explain that the power was out. "Put batteries in." Batteries, apparently, are like band-aids. They fix everything.
